The Way runs between the North Sea Coast at Roker (Wearmouth) to the Killhope Lead Mining Museum close to the source of the River.
The length of the Way is 77 miles / 124 Km or 72 miles / 115 Km if the walker stops at Wearhead.
The route has been revised slightly over the years and this website represents the route as defined most recently at the end of 2005.

Route Map

Although there is no correct way to split this walk, and there are many options, the website has choosen to divide the route into six sections. Equally there is no correct direction, it can be walked from the source to the mouth or as this website does, start from the sea and walk west into the North Pennine Area of Natural Beauty.

For a more detailed description on any of the sections simply click on the appropriate section above or click here to move to the start of the Way
